Posted: Thursday, July 24, 2014Appointment: Interim Associate Dean of Arts and Humanities
From the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities
I am pleased to announce that Lisa Berglund, professor of English, has accepted the position of interim associate dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, replacing Lisa Hunter, who is moving to SUNY Fredonia as associate provost for curriculum, assessment, and academic support. Associate professor Lorna Perez has graciously agreed to serve as acting chair of the English Department.
Elected chair of the English Department in 2013, Berglund received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and joined the Buffalo State English Department in 2001. She has published numerous articles on Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, Hester Lynch Piozzi, eighteenth-century studies, the history of lexicography, and the history of the book. At present, she is editing Piozzi’s Observations and Reflections Made in the Course of a Journey through France, Italy, and Germany (1789).
She has taught courses in Shakespeare, Milton, eighteenth-century studies, the history of the printed book, and lexicography. She served as executive secretary of the Dictionary Society of North America from 2007 to 2013. In 2014–2015, she is serving as president of the Northeast American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, as a board member of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Lexicography Discussion Group, and as a New York State representative to the MLA Delegate Assembly. Locally she serves as president of the Western New York Phi Beta Kappa Association and as a board member of the theater group Opera-Lytes. In 2013, she received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service.
In her new position, Berglund will serve the faculty and students of the School of Arts and Humanities through a diverse portfolio of leadership including curricular development, student academic concerns, technology enhancement, and assessment.
Please join me in welcoming her to the dean’s office.
