A little incivility can lead to a lot of problems within a department. To complicate matters, the tenure system can seem like a barrier to addressing incivility, but it doesn't have to be. Examine U.S. court rulings to clarify what collegiality is and isn’t and learn to apply these rulings to your own professional environments. Learn how to work effectively with other university constituencies to counteract the effects of uncivil faculty members on the campus community. Explore assessment instruments designed to provide an objective, reproducible measurement of an individual’s collegial behavior (or lack thereof).
Departmental leaders can create dynamic, positive, productive, and collective cultures within their departments by developing systems and structuring rewards so that it is more attractive to be collegial than non-collegial. Consider establishing a departmental code of conduct, using various assessment tools to establish and measure criteria for collegial behavior, and implementing ways to deal with non-collegial behavior.
This seminar will deliver concrete, proactive strategies to foster campus collegiality. Join us on Tuesday, November 12, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library 210.
