Satasha Green, assistant professor, Exceptional Education; Hibajene Shandomo, assistant professor, Elementary Education and Reading; Amitra Wall,associate professor, Sociology; Myrtle Welch, assistant professor, Elementary Education and Reading; andKathy Wood, associate professor, Elementary Education and Reading, and director, Center for Excellence in Urban and Rural Education, presented papers (narratives) related to “Identity, Affirmation, Equity, and Navigation in Higher Education” at the 56th annual New York State Sociological Association conference. Green focused on valuing nontraditional research. Shandomo asserted that mentorship needs to be redefined. Wall discussed the personal responsibilities of “making it.” Welch described challenges related to journeying from the plantation to academia. Wood suggested that equity of support within departments is needed.
