Posted: Wednesday, September 25, 2019Attention, Buffalo State Community: Act Now to Avoid a Forced Password Reset in October
Buffalo State is implementing a new 15-character (minimum) requirement for network passwords to enhance security. Your network password is the password you use to access campus computers, the secure wireless network, and most of the campus’s online services (except Banner SSB and Student Gmail). Accessing an electronic resource with a user ID and password certifies your identity and authorization to view or use the information or system. Buffalo State is dedicated to protecting institutional data; therefore, changing to longer passwords or passphrases will provide additional security.
Faculty, staff, and students have until Tuesday, October 15, to comply with this new standard and avoid temporarily losing access to their accounts. At that time, Information Technology Services (IT) will force a systemwide reset on any account that has a password shorter than 15 characters.
If you haven’t done so already, please complete these steps before the deadline to avoid losing access to your account:
Step 1: Set up your password recovery options.
Sign in to loginsetup.buffalostate.edu with your username followed by @buffalostate.edu and your current password. Complete the setup by adding two or more recovery options.
- Please read the Knowledge Base article "Register for Self-Service Password Reset" for detailed registration instructions.
Step 2: Perform a password reset and create a new 15-character (minimum) password or passphrase.
Go to passwordreset.buffalostate.edu, enter your username followed by @buffalostate.edu, and enter the CAPTCHA. After verifying your account, you’ll be able to create your new password.
- Please read the Knowledge Base article "Reset Your Password Using Self-Service Password Reset" for detailed reset instructions.
Please note: if your network password is already 15 characters (or longer), you can skip Step 2.
If you don’t complete these steps before the October 15 deadline, your password will be reset and you will temporarily lose access to your account. Unless you have completed the registration process (Step 1) and can perform a self-reset, your only option will be to contact the IT Help Desk during regular business hours to regain access to your account.
