Information Security Awareness: Just Because You Log In to Uber or Fitbit

Recently, Wired magazine ran a story about Cloudfare. Cloudfare provides platform services to help companies with website performance: strengthening site security and reliability and providing analytics. Companies like Uber and Fitbit and some banking institutions, insurance companies, blog providers, and webmail providers use Cloudfare services in connection with their own websites. For instance, when customers log in to Uber, their credentials and account information go through Cloudfare. Cloudfare had a vulnerability resulting in a leak of information, and deposited customer data on the websites it serves. While Cloudfare reacted quickly, security researchers are suggesting that everyone who uses a website supported by Cloudfare change all their passwords for all their accounts. How do you know if you were affected? You don’t, and often you won’t. Changing passwords is often a best practice.
