Information Security Awareness: Check This Website and Check It Regularly

In March, RITE posted a Daily Bulletin message about the Have I Been Pwned website, a free resource that allows Internet users to check whether their personal data has been compromised by data breaches. Troy Hunt founded and maintains the site as a public service.

Here's an example of how it works:

You used your Buffalo State e-mail address to sign up for a Dropbox account. Dropbox suffers a data breach. Your account is affected. When Dropbox releases information on the breach, Troy Hunt posts the affected e-mail addresses on Have I Been Pwned. If your e-mail address is there, you need to change all account passwords associated with that e-mail address. In this example, it would be Dropbox and Buffalo State passwords that need to be changed.

If you used your Hotmail e-mail address to sign up for Dropbox and that e-mail shows up on Have I Been Pwned, you need to change your password on any account for which you used your Hotmail e-mail address to sign up. Get it?

Go to Have I Been Pwned and type in your various e-mail addresses one at a time to see if you have been compromised. If you have, change all passwords associated with that e-mail address. Read about the site, and about Troy Hunt, on the Have I Been Pwned website.
