Friday, February 1, is National Wear Red Day. National Wear Red Day is a movement that encourages awareness of women and heart disease and promotes action to save lives. The movement harnesses the energy, passion, and power that women have to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and to take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a heart-healthy life.
Since the first National Wear Red Day 10 years ago, tremendous strides have been made in the fight against heart disease in women, including
- 21 percent fewer women dying from heart disease;
- 23 percent more women aware that heart disease is their No. 1 health threat;
- the publishing of gender-specific results, established differences in symptoms and responses to medications, and women-specific guidelines for prevention and treatment;
- legislation to help end gender disparities.
The Health Promotions Office will be taking pictures around campus of students, faculty, and staff who will be wearing red in support of the National Wear Red Day movement on Friday. Pictures will be posted (with consent) on the Health Promotions Facebook page as the Buffalo State National Wear Red Day Photo Project. If you would like us to stop by your office to take pictures, please send an e-mail to Tammy Kresge, assistant director of health promotions.
