Aaron Wheeler, associate professor of chemistry at the University of Toronto, will present his research talk "Labs-on-a-Chip and Mass Spectrometry for Clinical Analysis" at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, November 29, in Science Building 272. An abstract of his talk appears below.

Before his presentation, from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m., Wheeler will converse with undergraduate and graduate students at Buffalo State regarding his career as a scientist and the graduate program at the University of Toronto. This private conversation will be held in Science Building 271C.

Abstract
The "lab on a chip" concept represents a revolution in chemical analysis—we propose to miniaturize laboratory instruments and processes on an integrated handheld device. Labs-on-a-chip are particularly powerful when combined with sample analysis by mass spectrometry. This talk will cover my group's recent work applying labs-on-a-chip and mass spectrometry to problems in clinical sample analysis including the quantification of analytes associated with breast cancer in tissue samples and for screening blood samples from newborn patients for markers associated with metabolic disorders.
