Faculty and Staff Appeal 2011

Carol Y. Beckley, associate professor in the Theater Department, teaches set design, a career made possible in part by help from others. “Working my way through college was tough,” she said. “Scholarships and the generosity of individuals assisted me every step of the way.”

Each of the three funds Carol supports is special to her. “The McCarthy-Eskew Scholarship is dear to my heart,” she said. “Donna McCarthy, former chair of Theater, was my mentor for 15 years. Her mother, Betty Eskew, helped out in our costume shop. So I am honored to donate to a fund created by people who contributed to my success and the success of hundreds of students.”

The Dr. Harry and Lorraine Ausprich Endowed Scholarship is “the exact kind of scholarship I received as an undergraduate,” said Carol.

Finally, Carol supports the Adult Student Scholarship Fund because of her mother, who took one class a semester for 12 years to complete her bachelor’s degree. Carol said, “I want to help other adult learners who value education and are following their dreams.”

Payroll deduction makes it easier for Carol to be generous. “The amount I give every two weeks is something I can afford,” she said. “Giving the whole amount at once would be impossible.”
