The Exposition: Logo Contest and Rules

The History and Social Studies Education Department and Phi Alpha Theta, the history honors society, are pleased to announce a contest for the design of a new logo for the History and Social Studies Education's online journal, the Exposition.

In keeping with the activities held at Buffalo State in celebration of the Year of the Arts, the newly founded journal is looking for a logo for use on its front cover. The journal, to be published twice a year, needs a logo that reflects the aims and goals of the journal while celebrating the event for which it was named, the Pan-American Exposition held in Buffalo, New York, in 1901.

The journal's stated agenda is

"To provide a forum where students in the fields of history, social studies education, and museum studies at Buffalo State can share their research and practice. Our goal is to highlight the exceptional quality of research, writing, and practice of the students at Buffalo State College.

We hope for the online journal to reach the widest possible audience. We strive to provide students with an opportunity to share their work with peers and professionals. By giving Buffalo State students the opportunity to publish their work, we hope to further their future goals whether they be academic or professional."

The logo must be an original piece of art. Please, no use of photographic or video elements. Entries must not be based on any preexisting design. Participants in the contest must be graduate or undergraduate students (either full or part time) at Buffalo State College during the fall 2011 semester. Images will be shrunk to 240 pixels wide by 125 pixels high; therefore, it is imperative that entries be able to withstand such modifications. Images may be in either black and white or color. Only one submission per entrant is permitted. The winning piece will become the property of the Exposition and the History and Social Studies Education Department.

The winning entry will be judged by a panel of History and Social Studies Education students and faculty members. At least one member of the committee will be a student selected from Phi Alpha Theta. There will also be student representation from the department's social studies education and museum studies components. There will be at least two faculty members on the committee.

Deadline for submission of entries is October 1, 2011. The winner will be announced on October 15, 2011. The winner of the contest will receive a $100 gift certificate from Amazon.com, which has generously been donated by the chair of the History and Social Studies Department. Furthermore, the winner will have the privilege of seeing his or her artwork on the cover of issues of the Exposition.

Please include your name, e-mail, phone number, and address with entry. Also include your major and class year in the e-mail. Final entries should be e-mailed to Bridget Chesterton. Please include “The Exposition Logo Contest” in the subject line of the e-mail.
