Please join us for the annual SUNY Buffalo State English Education Spring Banquet on Friday, May 11, from 5:30 to 10:00 p.m. at Pearl Street Brewery. The banquet is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the many individuals who work to encourage and support the meaningful teaching of English language arts throughout our region and across the country.
Tickets are $25 and include a buffet featuring beer-braised pot roast, chicken, six-cheese bowtie pasta, smashed potatoes, grilled vegetables, salad, dessert (courtesy of DiCamillo Bakery), and coffee. A cash bar will be open throughout the event.
Tickets can be purchased online.
We are excited to announce that Julie Gorlewski, department chair and associate professor of teaching and learning at Virginia Commonwealth University, will receive the 2018 English Education Alumni Award at the banquet. Dr. Gorlewski, former co-editor of NCTE's English Journal, received her degree in English education from Buffalo State in 1985. Dr. Gorlewski will deliver the keynote address, "Agents of the State or Agents of Change? Teaching to Change the World."
Additionally, the Western New York Network of English Teachers will honor the following 2018 recipients of the Distinguished English Teacher Awards. These teachers have made an impact on the young people of our region by creating meaningful, engaging secondary English classrooms:
- Regina Derrico, Lifetime Achievement Award, Williamsville East High School
- Colleen Duggan, Frontier Central Schools, Administrative Leadership Award
- Liz Lyons, Buffalo Academy of the Visual and Performing Arts, Experienced Teacher Award
- Petrina Scaglione, Maritime Charter School, First Year Teacher Award
- Angela Waligora, Holland Central Schools, Early Career Award
The program will also honor recent graduates, mentor teachers, and other individuals who support the English education program throughout the year.
