The following have been received in the College Senate Office and forwarded to the College Senate Curriculum Committee for spring 2017 review:
New Courses:
EXE 221 Foundations of Effective Assessment and Instruction in Special Education. Prerequisites: EXE 100 (minimum grade of C), exceptional education major, and minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6. Foundations in effective assessment and instructional practices for all students. Basic understanding of different types of assessment and how to interpret assessment information to form goals and objectives related to individualized instruction. Essential principles related to effective instruction for students with disabilities. Offered every semester, beginning spring 2018.
EXE 341 Teaching Math to Students with and at Risk for Disabilities. Prerequisites: EXE 321 (minimum grade of C), EDU 322 (minimum grade of C), EXE/EDU 323 (minimum grade of C), exceptional education major, and minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6. Corequisites: EDU 342 and EXE/EDU 343. Identifying the learning characteristics of students with disabilities and those considered at-risk in mathematics. Assessing and planning evidenced-based, tiered math instruction to address skill deficits and conceptual understanding of elementary, standards-based mathematics. Offered every semester, beginning January 2018.
EXE 343 Field Placement for Teaching Elementary School Mathematics. Prerequisites: EXE 321 (minimum grade of C), EDU 322 (minimum grade of C ), EXE/EDU 323 (minimum grade of C), exceptional education major, and minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6. Corequisites: EDU 342 and EXE/EDU 343. Field experience course in elementary school mathematics. Students plan, implement, differentiate, and evaluate mathematics lessons; administer and evaluate assessment tools and processes; become reflective practitioners; and demonstrate effective techniques for instructional organization in an elementary school. Students design and implement plans that address elementary student deficits in mathematics. Offered every semester, beginning spring 2018.
EXE 390 Strategies and Technology to Adapt to Content Area Instruction. Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C in all EXE and EDU courses, exceptional education major, and minimum cumulative GPA of 2.6. Corequisite: EXE 420. Learning to design, adapt, and deliver instruction so students with disabilities and other at-risk learners can access content area curriculum. Key concepts include learning strategy instruction, content enhancement routines, instructional adaptations, and use of assistive and instructional technology tools. Offered every semester, beginning spring 2018.
GEG 429 Advanced Topics in GIS. Prerequisite: GEG 425 or equivalent GIS course. Builds from the topics covered in GEG 425, focusing on digital representation of the human and physical environment, including location referencing from a human perspective, database design, data quality issues (how to identify and document errors), spatial statistical analysis using GIS, the fourth dimension (time) in GIS, and understanding spatial analysis algorithms and models. Offered spring semester, beginning spring 2018.
SSE/SST 500 Introduction to Social Studies Education. Classroom and field experiences designed to help students make better-informed decisions regarding careers in secondary social studies education. The definition and purpose of social studies; current research trends in social studies education. Required for social studies education majors. Offered every semester, beginning spring 2018.
SSE/SST 603 Middle School Social Studies Instruction. Prerequisites: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, SSE 500, and SSE 524. The purposes, goals, curricular materials, methodologies, and instructional techniques of middle school social studies education. Developing competency in designing and practicing instructional strategies drawn from methodologies and of the curricular materials of middle school social studies education and the disciplines of history and the social sciences. Offered each semester, beginning spring 2018.
SSE/SST 609 Student Teaching of Social Studies in the Middle School. Prerequisites: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, SSE 524 (minimum grade of B), SSE 603 (minimum grade of B), and successful completion of content and pedagogical coursework. Supervised teaching experiences for five full days a week for approximately seven consecutive weeks in a middle school classroom. Effective demonstration of content knowledge, pedagogical preparation, instructional, delivery, classroom management, knowledge of student development, collaboration with school professionals, and reflectivity of practice required. Offered each semester, beginning spring 2018.
SSE/SST 611 Student Teaching of Social Studies in High School. Prerequisites: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, SSE 524 (minimum grade of B), SSE 603 (minimum grade of B), and successful completion of content and pedagogical coursework. Supervised teaching experience for five full days a week for approximately seven consecutive weeks in a high school classroom. Effective demonstration of content knowledge, pedagogical preparation, instructional delivery, classroom management, knowledge of student development, collaboration with school professionals, and reflectivity of practice required. Offered every semester, beginning spring 2018.
Course Revisions:
BIO 619 Plant Ecology. Prerequisite: Undergraduate course in ecology. The relationship between plants and their environment from the scale of individuals to ecosystems. Plant physiological ecology, plant community composition and structure, competition and facilitation, effects of human activities, disturbances, succession, and plant-animal interactions. Offered every other year, beginning spring 2018.
ENT 314 Applied Solid Modeling. Prerequisites: TEC 101 and ENT 301. Three-dimensional (3-D) parts and assembly creation; defining high-level features like cuts and holes in addition to low-level geometry; using parametric modeling; 3-D modeling; analyzing solid models with finite element technique for stress and heat testing; applying solid models on rapid prototyping machines. Offered every semester, beginning fall 2017.
GEG 425 Fundamentals of GIS. Prerequisite: GEG/PLN 325 or equivalent, or instructor permission. Principles and methods of spatial data capture, automation, spatial database models and structures. Fundamentals of spatial data processing and analytical methods including spatial database query, database join and spatial join, geographic location and geographic coordinate systems, spatial geocoding, buffering, map overlay, and raster surface interpolations. Offered every semester, beginning fall 2017.
