New Courses:
AED 680 History and Philosophy of Art Education.Prerequisite: Graduate-level status in AED with 3.0 GPA.Critical examination of the historical roots and ideological underpinnings of art education within public/private schooling from elementary to higher education in the U.S., with special attention to the relations among schools and society with respect to social equality and a democratic way of life.

DMP 221 Introduction to Sound Recording and Reinforcement. Prerequisite: Instructor permission.Introduction to the history, technology, and future of analog and digital audio systems and their application. The physics of sound and the art and science of live sound reinforcement and recording including acoustics, microphone selection and placement, signal processing, mixing, loudspeaker design, editing, digital audio workstation software, MIDI, and sound system design for live venues.

DMP 350 Electronic Music Composition I. The creative use of sound and music through the exploration of technology, history, theory, and practice of electronic music since the 1920s. Provides students with a wide range of technical, theoretical, and aesthetic concepts aimed at developing and strengthening music composition skills. The technological nature of the class encompasses the learning of fundamental software tools while favoring a critical-thinking approach to the unique expressive power of electronic music composition.

EDU 646 Literacy Leadership. Prerequisite: EDU 642. Corequisite: EDU 643. Instruction and experience in the various facets of being a literacy leader, including literacy coaching, program evaluation, professional development, and data compilation and analysis for the purpose of providing appropriate literacy instruction for students from birth to grade 12.

IDE 354 Global Design Study Tour. Prerequisites: Visual arts sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and instructor permission.Opportunity to travel and experience a wide range of different cultural and geographical settings and their impact on interior design, art, and architecture. Students study exemplary global designs with an awareness and respect for cultural and social diversity.

MUS 349 West African Drumming Ensemble.Prerequisite: Instructor permission. Prerequisite or corequisite: MUS 209 or prior musical experience.Introduction to traditional West African rhythms on djembes, dundun drums, and iron bells. Students explore cultural contexts and learn to give and respond to rhythmic signals, learn to play different rhythms simultaneously, and learn culturally and rhythmically appropriate improvisation techniques.

MUS 625 Curriculum and Assessment. Prerequisite: Instructor permission. Current trends in curriculum and assessment and the effect on music instruction. Introduces a standards- and repertoire-based curriculum model as a framework to facilitate development of pre-K–12 curriculum for ensembles and general music classes.

MUS 640 Research Methods in Music Education.Prerequisite: Instructor permission. Study of historical, descriptive, qualitative, and experimental research in music education. Students study various research methodologies and analyze example studies in order to facilitate understanding of music education research.

MUS 290 Philharmonia Orchestra. Prerequisite: Audition. Participation in the Buffalo State College Philharmonia Orchestra, a college-community ensemble composed of qualified Buffalo State student musicians and experienced community musicians. The orchestra serves as the principal vehicle for increasing students’ awareness of symphonic repertoire, orchestral excerpts, and performance protocol as directly related to an orchestral ensemble. Repertoire is planned and organized to provide students with a diverse exposure to important classical, pops, and seasonal programming. May be taken more than once.

ENG 230 Comparative Literature. Comparative analyses of the ways in which literary periods, genres, movements, and social forms are shaped by the languages and cultural contexts through which they come into being.

ORAL COMMUNICATION
THA 350 Directing I. Prerequisite: THA 226 and THA 234, or instructor permission. Examination of the theater director’s craft and responsibilities of preparing a play, through lecture and hands-on projects.

Course Revisions:
AED 310 Art Media and Methods Exploration.Prerequisites: For ATS minors: ATS 320 and one visual arts studio course, or instructor permission; for AED majors: Junior or senior status, or instructor permission.Development of practical skill and knowledge in art media, methods, and resources for educational and/or therapeutic purposes. Hands-on exploration of culturally diverse traditional and nontraditional art tools and materials that are appropriate for school and community settings; media analysis for application to promoting developmental and/or therapeutic goals.

ATS 320 Introduction to Art and Therapy.Prerequisite: Junior or senior status. For ATS minors: two approved human service courses, or instructor permission. Introduction to the theory and practice of art therapy. Exploration of art as a means of assessment and treatment for child, teen, and adult populations in various therapeutic settings such as hospitals, mental health clinics, nursing homes, and developmental centers. Clinical case material presentations and exploration of personal creative processes.

ATS 325 Art for Children with Special Learning Needs. Prerequisites: For ATS minors: ATS 320 and one approved human service course, or instructor permission; for AED majors: AED 301 and 3.0 GPA in major, or instructor permission. Examining the role of art as it relates to development of children with special learning needs due to disability and/or adverse environmental circumstances. Emphasis on differentiated instruction, therapeutic teaching, roles of the art educator and the art therapist, and cultural competence. 30 hours of supervised fieldwork takes place in approved settings that serve children with special learning needs.

DMP 321 Recording Techniques. Prerequisite: DMP 221 or instructor permission. Examination of electronic audio systems and their application, including the art and science of sound recording and reinforcement of instrumental and vocal music in live and studio situations. Topics include practical applications of microphone selection and placement, signal processing, mixing, amplification, loudspeaker types, digital audio editing software, MIDI, and sound system design for live venues.

EDU 535 Teaching Writing: B–12. Student-centered process approach to teaching writing based on the premise that students need to write and, in appropriate settings, like to write. Focus on instructional strategies for the classroom, the writing process, the relationship between reading and writing, conferencing, classroom management, evaluation, writing across all areas of the school curriculum.

EDU 643 Teaching Strategies for Students with Reading Difficulties. Prerequisite: EDU 642. Planning and implementing instructional programs for students with reading difficulties: principles of remedial reading; methods and materials for remedial instruction; working with parents of children with reading problems; effective report writing. Under clinical supervision, students apply appropriate teaching techniques with student referred to the Literacy Center and write a summary report for the student’s school and parents.

EDU 647 Practicum in Reading. Prerequisites: EDU 643 and summer registration for EDU 650 and EDU 655.Integration of theoretical and practical aspects of the reading program in a supervised clinical setting. Students function as members of the Literacy Center staff and are required to develop, implement, and evaluate diagnostic and remedial reading programs for children referred to the Literacy Center. Written reports are prepared for the parents and schools of the children serviced in the Literacy Center. Summer only.

ENG 200 Field Experience in Secondary English Education. Prerequisite: English education major or enrollment in the postbaccalaureate certification program. Introduction to the secondary school as an institution and to the teaching of English as a profession. Required observations of teaching English and other areas, 7–12. Limited experimentation with teaching secondary English.

ENG 418 The British Novel 1800–1900. Prerequisite: ENG 190 or instructor permission. Exploration of British novels written between 1800 and 1900.

ENG 441 The Romantic Movement in American Literature. Prerequisites: ENG 190W and 3 hours of English literature, or instructor permission. Texts that exemplify the American Transcendental and Romantic traditions of New England, and their impact on American literature, philosophy, and politics.

ENG 451 Studies in Fiction. Prerequisites: ENG 190 and 3 hours of literature or instructor permission.Analysis of selected aspects of the novel, novella, or short story: theme, motif, concept, or movement in English, American, or world literature. May be taken more than once when content is different.
