Beyond Boundaries: 'Attica' - Today

The Beyond Boundaries Film and Discussion Series is pleased to present the documentary film Attica (2021) today, November 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center Tower Auditorium. The screening is free and open to the public. A reception will be held before the film at 5:30 p.m in memory of SUNY vice chancellor and UB vice provost and law professor Teresa Miller.

During the summer of 1971, tensions between inmates and guards at the Attica Correctional Facility are at an all-time high. On the morning of September 9, it all comes to a head as Attica becomes the stage for one of the largest U.S. prison riots ever. Filmmaker Stanley Nelson has a distinguished career telling stories of Black struggle against white supremacy. The filmmakers conduct dozens of new interviews and make powerful use of surveillance footage to understand the legacy of resistance and its violent backlash.

Beyond Boundaries is sponsored by the Equity and Campus Diversity Office, the Communication Department, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. The series is curated by Ruth Goldman and Meg Knowles, associate professors of media production in the Communication Department.
