Colleen Toledano, assistant professor of design, spent four weeks in July and August working in collaboration with the plaster masters at Laufen in Bechyne, Czech Republic, the largest producers of sanitary ware in Europe, to produce an artisan ceramic sink. She will share her experience working at the factory and her first time in Europe as part of the “Artists on the Road: Travel as a Source of Inspiration” series on Thursday, October 23, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Upton Hall 230. Her basin will be shown as part of the Laufen artists’ collection at design expos in Prague, Czech Republic, and Milan, Italy, this fall.
"I was granted unprecedented access to facilities and materials and had to focus only upon producing a ceramic sink of my own design," Toledano said. "This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from factory technicians and other resident artists."
For further information on this series, which is co-sponsored by the Design Department and the International and Exchange Programs Office, please contact Carol Townsend, associate professor of design and coordinator of design foundations, ext. 4986.
