The Buffalo State University Sustainability Committee invites the campus community to attend an Arbor Day Tree-Planting Ceremony on Arbor Day—Friday, April 28—from noon to 12:30 p.m. on the east side of Bishop Hall near Cleveland Circle. The event will move to the Student Union Plaza, north of Cleveland Hall, in the event of inclement weather. This event will feature speakers whose topics include the significance of Arbor Day, how urban trees are important for ecological systems, how the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum has become an important campus outdoor classroom, and an update of the current condition and future of the arboretum.

An American sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) will be added to the over 1,400 trees in the Buffalo State University’s Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum. This tree is native to New York State; however, it is much more common in the southeastern United States. This tree is important to commerce as it is used for lumber, resins, and turpentine. The Native Americans would use its sap to make chewing gum.

Thank you to the Friends of the Maud Gordon Holmes Arboretum for donating the tree and supplies and to the volunteers who will help plant the tree.
