Nancy S. Weekly, Head of Collections and Charles Cary Rumsey Curator, Burchfield Penney Art Center

Nancy Weekly, head of collections and Charles Cary Rumsey curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, was interviewed by arts journalist Judith H. Dobrzynski, whose review of the current exhibition Charles E. Burchfield: Transitions was published in the Wall Street Journal August 21.

Dobrzynski, an independent arts journalist from New York with a long-standing interest in Burchfield’s landscape paintings, approached the Journal about writing the piece. She traveled to Buffalo for a private preview of the works, and then toured the exhibition and interviewed Weekly, the exhibition’s organizer. A Burchfield scholar, Weekly also teaches museum studies courses in the History and Social Studies Education Department at Buffalo State.

Dobrzynski's review includes images of Burchfield’s Oncoming Spring; Clearing Sky; View from Our Front Porch at Salem, Ohio; and February Dusk as well as Appleton’s 1950 portrait of Burchfield. A later photo of Burchfield painting in his studio is included online.

Charles E. Burchfield: Transitions is on view through December 1.

(Buffalo State faculty, staff, and students have free access to Wall Street Journal articles online through E. H. Butler Library.)
