Wanda Slawinska, associate librarian, was invited to take part in the 2013 Buffalo State Women's Studies Research Symposium in E. H. Butler Library in honor of Women's History Month. She presented a poster and read a paper on the achievements of Maria Siemionow, a Polish microsurgeon and face transplantologist at the Cleveland Clinic, who in 2008 successfully transplanted a nearly full face for the first time in the United States. Only four facial transplants had been done in the world to that date. Slawinska's paper was titled "You Need a Face to Face the World."
