Scott W. Phillips and James J. Sobol, assistant professors, Criminal Justice, along with Sean P. Varano of Roger Williams University, had a research paper accepted for publication in the International Journal of Police Science and Management titled “Work Attitudes of Police Recruits: Is There a Family Connection?” The paper examines beliefs and attitudes of police recruits in the training academy, comparing recruits with a generational connection to policing with those recruits with no family link. Recruits with no family in law enforcement were more likely to respond that citizens would be uncooperative and not supportive of police patrol efforts. Moreover, recruits with no family in law enforcement were more likely to hold a negative attitude toward their supervisor.
