Daniel Cunningham, Professor, Mathematics

The article "Set Theory" by Daniel W. Cunningham, professor of mathematics, now appears in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy (IEP). The foundational role of set theory and its mathematical development have raised many philosophical questions that have been debated since its inception in the late nineteenth century; for example, Does infinity exist, and if so, are there different kinds of infinity? Is there a mathematical universe? Are all mathematical problems solvable? Before pursuing the philosophical issues concerning set theory, one should be familiar with a standard mathematical development of set theory. This article presents such a development.

The submission and review process of articles submitted to the IEP is the same as that with printed philosophy journals, books, and reference works. The authors are specialists in the areas in which they write, and are frequently leading authorities. Submissions are peer reviewed by specialists according to strict criteria. The peer-review process is rigorous and meets high academic standards. Julian Cole, associate professor of philosophy at Buffalo State, is the IEP editor for the subject area Philosophy of Mathematics.
