Four hundred fourteen students in the Arthur O. EveEducational Opportunity Program will be recognized for outstanding academic achievement during the annualEOP Honors Convocation at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. The theme for this year’s event is “Imagine, Believe, Achieve: A Tribute to Our Educators.” All are welcome to attend.
Students who have attained a minimum grade point average of 3.0 during either the spring or fall semester of 2008, or who currently maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0, will be recognized. This year’s celebration marks the highest number of EOP honors students in the program’s history.
During the event, EOP staff will recognize Angela Maria Caba, ’95, with the EOP Distinguished Alumnus Award, which is presented to an EOP graduate who is prominent in his or her professional endeavors and has made significant contributions to the community. Caba is a doctor of osteopathic medicine at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, New York. In addition, New York State Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples, ’74, ’02, will be recognized with the Community Activist Legacy Award.
As part of this year’s EOP community service project, EOP staff crocheted 24 unique “diversity” dolls (pictured) and prepared two large food baskets. The items will be on display during the event and will later be donated to Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and the Food Bank of Western New York.
Currently, 875 students are enrolled in EOP, which serves as an undergraduate college admissions and support program for students facing economic or academic challenges. The program was established in 1967 by former New York State Assemblyman and Deputy Speaker Arthur O. Eve, and was the first of its kind in the SUNY system.
