Visual Arts Board Selections: Artists' Self-Portraits from the Gerald Mead Collection

The Visual Arts Board has organized an exhibition of works in various media from the collection of Gerald Mead to begin the spring 2015 semester of exhibitions in the Dr. Margaret Eschner Bacon Student Gallery in Upton Hall. Mead is an alumnus of Buffalo State and an adjunct professor in the Design Department. The works chosen reflect several disciplines taught in studio classes at the college.

Because all the works either depict or refer to the artists who created them, they can broadly be described as "self-portraits." The artists’ rationale for creating self-referential work varies widely. Some have used their own image throughout their career, while others have used themselves as models out of ease or convenience. Artists have also been the subject of their own work to address topics such as body image, identity, alienation, and place.

The artists in the exhibition are Candace Camuglia, Caitlin Cass, Matt Grote, Robert Harris, Andrew Hershey, Robert Jones, Pat Kewley, Kate Parzych, Anthony Pismarov, Caesandra Seawell, and Tom Van Dusen, as well as Buffalo State alumni Derek Gabryszak and Aaron Ingrao and former adjunct faculty members Anders Fernbach and Jason Seeley.

The exhibition is on view through Friday, February 6.
