A Study of Decomposition and Its Relationship to Temperature in WNY

Anthropology major Jessica Stabell will present her summer research on the rate and stages of soft tissue decay on Monday, September 17, in Classroom Building A209. Her presentation will take place in the Applied Climatology class, between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. All are welcome.

Daily temperature is important in considering the stages of decay, as decay is far more temperature dependent than time dependent. Using the accumulated-degree-day (ADD) method, Stabell developed an ADD index specific to Western New York for each of the decay stages. This method provides an accurate estimate of time since death.
