Student E-mail Moves to Gmail on October 12

Buffalo State student e-mail accounts are moving to Gmail on Wednesday, October 12. Please be aware that during the cutover (6:00–9:00 a.m. October 12), students will not be able to access their e-mail accounts. Once the cutover is completed, they will have new accounts in Gmail with the SAME e-mail addresses they had  before.

Some Things to Know in Case Your Students Ask about the Gmail Transition
To look up their initial Gmail passwords, students can log in to Banner any time after 9:00 a.m. on October 12. On the Personal Information tab, click on “View/Reset Student Gmail Password.”

Students will have a new password for e-mail ONLY. All other access remains the same—the password for their campus network account (to access lab computers, ANGEL, wireless network, library databases) will not change. That network account password can also be used to log in to the old mail system (webmail) after the cutover to read or forward old messages.

Student e-mail messages will NOT be moved to Gmail automatically. Students may forward individual messages or request that their entire mailbox be copied to Gmail. (Note: We are recommending that students forward messages selectively, as the copy process may take weeks to complete.)

Students’ contacts will not be able to be transferred from webmail to Gmail, so they'll need to make note of their webmail contacts and update them in Gmail.

The library will host a Gmail launch event on Wednesday, October 12, to provide support for students as they make the move to Gmail. Students who activate their accounts on that day are eligible for entry into a Gmail raffle to win a Bengal Bucks gift card.
