Cultures of Southeast Asia*

Discover and learn about the cultures of various Southeast Asian countries. What is culture? What are the characteristics and dimensions of culture? What kinds of culture do Southeast Asian countries have in common? How are they different from Western or American culture? Student posters will be on display along with formal presentations.

Experience the traditional music and musical instruments of Java Island. The Buffalo Gamelan Club plays traditional music from the island of Java in Indonesia, which is inspiring and evocative music that fills audiences with wonder.

Discover an exciting evening concert featuring music performed by the Buffalo Gamelan Club and a shadow puppet show featuring Wayang puppet master Darsono Hadiraharjo and drummer Heri Purwanto. The Buffalo Gamelan Club plays traditional music from the island of Java in Indonesia. Wayang is a form of puppet theater art found in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia. The show features puppets, vocal narration, characteristic movement demonstration, and scenes to give the audience a unique experience. Puppet master Hadiraharjo is a visiting scholar and guest director of the Cornell Gamelan Ensemble at Cornell University.

Politics and Current Situation of Indonesia*
Abdulkadir Jailani, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in New York

Join us for an exciting talk on the current politics and situation in Indonesia. Abdulkadir Jailani is an eminent and experienced diplomat who has served the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia for more than 20 years. Mr. Jailani earned a master of European law and policy from Portsmouth University, UK, and attended the doctor of law program at the University of Indonesia from 2002 until 2005. Mr. Jailani’s role includes supporting Indonesia’s strategic foreign and domestic policy interests. He has served as a lead negotiator in the establishment of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Framework Instrument on Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and as vice chairman of the Intergovernmental Committee of WIPO on Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge, and Folklore (2014). Mr. Jailani is an avid reader of philosophy and politics and an enthusiastic black-and-white photographer. His life philosophy is “Nothing has any foundation; things should be approached from a particular perspective and particular end.”

This panel seeks to provide a geopolitical framework of regions around the globe by providing information on the current state of politics in North America, Africa, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. Discussion includes the current state of democracy in these regions as well as how the current state of global politics affects the United States and vice versa.
