Response to Senate Recommendation

From the President
At the November 12, 2010, meeting of the College Senate, the following Motion to Revise Policies related to Undergraduate Academic Standing was approved and forwarded to the president for review and final action:

Motion to Revise Policies related to Undergraduate Academic Standing
Introduced by the Standards for Students Committee in November 2010
(Please refer to the current college policy on page 29 of the 2009-2011 undergraduate catalog)

Whereas, the Standards for Student committee has been reviewing Buffalo State’s good academic standing policy (and related policies of academic probation and dismissal) for the past two years based on the request of campus constituents,

Whereas, conversations in the College Senate during the 2009-2010 academic year highlighted the campus commitment (and conventional wisdom) to a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) being the minimum GPA required for good academic standing at Buffalo State,

Whereas, students are required to have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA in order to graduate from Buffalo State (with some majors requiring higher GPAs),

Whereas, federal financial aid eligibility requires students to maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA after the first semester of attendance to receive federal aid (including student loans) and state financial aid eligibility requires student to maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA after the third semester of attendance (based on the TAP eligibility chart to be implemented in fall 2011) to receive state aid,

Whereas,
the current Buffalo State strategic and academic plans have multiple references to increased academic rigor and student performance,

Whereas, although having an identified cumulative GPA standard of good academic standing will send a clear and consistent message that will assist in student graduation, aid eligibility, and academic performance, it should be noted that college student development research indicates the struggles some students experience during their transition semesters as either first-time college students or first-semester transfer students; thus, Buffalo State should be responsive to these issues in order assist our students in achieving their graduation goals.

Therefore:
BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate recommend the following attached revisions to the undergraduate Academic Standing policies, effective fall 2011.
