New Emergency Alert System

From the Vice President for Finance and Management
Our campus has implemented a new emergency alert system, Buff State Alert, which was widely used for the first time on Monday in response to the power outage. It replaces the college’s former alert system, SUNY NY-Alert.

Please note that if you were signed up for SUNY NY-Alert as of October 19, 2012, you are already enrolled in Buff State Alert. Students, faculty, and staff who wish to modify their preferences may do so by visiting https://buffstatealert.buffalostate.edu and logging in with your Buffalo State user name and password. If you do not have a Buffalo State user name or password but still want to receive text messages from Buff State Alert, you can sign up by texting the phrase “buffalostate” to 79516.

Staff members from Computing and Technology Services, College Relations, the Emergency Response Planning Group, and University Police are currently evaluating the first test of the new system and will be taking steps to ensure that messages are delivered appropriately in the future (e.g., eliminating duplicate messages, Barracuda delivery issues).

Like the previous emergency alert system, Buff State Alert will be used only to convey messages regarding serious safety issues, utility failures, or weather-related campuswide closures and cancellations. Personal data provided to Buff State Alert will not be used for any other purpose or for campus information broadcast.

Buff State Alert is capable of sending text messages, recorded voice messages, and e-mail messages to multiple addresses and phone numbers. In addition, the new system is capable of immediately posting messages to the Buffalo State home page, social media sites, and by second semester, to the campus cable system and select video message boards.

Participation in Buff State Alert is encouraged but is completely voluntary. The system is provided at no cost to users, except for provider charges that may be incurred for receiving voice or text messages.

If you have questions about Buff State Alert, please read the User Guide or e-mail the Computing Help Desk.
