Information Security Awareness: New Research on Passwords

You may have seen that the National Institute of Standards and Technology has issued new guidelines for how to create passwords. Educause has a timely article. What's changed? We now have research findings to inform practice. If you're interested in the research studies and methods, watch the Ted Talk by Lorrie Faith Cranor of Carnegie Mellon.

The biggest takeaway for Buffalo State information security awareness:

"Complexity is dead; focus on password length. Stop inflicting painful complexity requirements, instead long live the passphrase." (Educause)
