Posted: Friday, January 17, 2014Faculty Proposals Due Today: Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo Competitive Grants

The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo is accepting letters of intent (LOI) for its 2014 competitive grant cycle. The LOI process is the first step in the Community Foundation’s competitive grant cycle; it allows the grant review committee to determine if a project merits further consideration. The foundation typically receives up to 200 letters of intent from which an average of 20 are selected for funding. This will be the only competitive grant opportunity in 2014. Applicants will receive grant outcome notification in mid-June.
Buffalo State faculty members are invited to submit ideas for proposals to their academic deans by noon today, January 17. Each dean will forward one recommendation to Susanne Bair, vice president for institutional advancement, who with Provost Dennis Ponton and Associate Vice President for Development Mary Dwyer will decide which project or program to advance. The faculty member whose suggestion is chosen will be notified on Tuesday, January 21. The letter of inquiry must be submitted by Monday, February 3.
LOI proposals must address at least one of the following objectives listed under the Community Foundation’s four focus areas:
- Improve educational achievement for low-income students
- Increase racial/ethnic equity
- Enhance and leverage significant natural resources
- Strengthen the region as a center for architecture, arts, and culture
In addition to the four focus areas and corresponding objectives, special funding is available to support the following:
- AIDS research and its cure (~$5,000)
- Programs that serve the visually, speech, or hearing impaired (~$5,000)
Past award recipients include the Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo’s Bridging the Gap program, the Buffalo Museum of Science’s Visitor and Education Center at Tifft Nature Preserve, the Forest Lawn Heritage Foundation’s Landscape Renewal Project, the Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo and Erie County’s After-School Tutoring Program, and the installation of a sound system for SABAH (formerly the Skating Association for the Blind and Handicapped).
