Documentary: 'Above and Below the Ground' - Simulcast Screening and Discussion: October 16

Please join us for a screening and discussion of the documentary film Above and Below the Ground on Monday, October 16, at 6:00 p.m. in Newman Lecture Hall, Bulger Communication Center 215. The film tells the story of Myanmar’s first and only countrywide environmental movement by Indigenous women activists and punk rock pastors to protect a sacred river from a Chinese-built mega-dam through protest, prayer, and Karaoke music videos.

The film is being simulcast at over 20 universities across North America including Cornell, Harvard, Yale, and the University of California at Berkeley. (See the full list of screening locations.) The University of Hawaii at Manoa will host the in-person portion of the event, where the film’s director, Emily Hong, and producer Maggie Lemere will hold a discussion via Zoom following the screening.

This event is sponsored by the Buffalo State Global Studies Institute and the Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies (GETSEA) consortium.
