Critical Guidelines for Federal Work-Study Supervisors

Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program supervisors play an important role on campus. We have prepared a few noteworthy instructions to assist you with your administrative duties.

You may begin interviewing students the Monday before classes begin, August 20. You will use the student’s eligibility letter to determine how many hours the student may work. You must see this letter to ensure that the student has an FWS award for fall 2012. Please do not hold positions for students who do not have an FWS award.

Use the Buffalo State FWS website to determine what paperwork is required. While the first day a student may work is August 27, he or she may not begin working until the paperwork is complete and has been returned to the Financial Aid Office.

Please use the FWS handbook and calculator on the Buffalo State FWS website as well. We recommend that you use the FWS calculator to track earnings. It is the responsibility of the supervisor and the student to ensure that the semester amount of earnings is not exceeded. Remember that changes to a student’s award will affect the number of hours the student may work. In order to ensure that students are paid in an accurate and timely fashion, timesheets must be completed daily and turned in on time.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Questions may be directed to Lea Nuwer in the Financial Aid Office, ext. 4902.
