'Artists on the Road' Journal-Making Workshop: November 17

Professor, artist, and world traveler Justin Dahl will present a demonstration on journal making on Thursday, November 17, at 12:15 p.m. in Upton Hall 301. The session is open to all students, faculty, and staff. Using simple materials such as leather, paper, and thread, attendees can create their own professional sketchbook or journal to document their travels and thoughts. Bringing your own scissors, exacto knives, rulers, and pencils; cutting mats would be helpful.

This event is the last in the fall 2016 Artists on the Road series of presentations.

Dahl says this about his hand-made travel journals used for drawing: "Drawing not only transcends time but also language and ethnicity. Along the way, I drew every day, ended up on the news in Rome drawing the Trevi Fountain, and made friends in every walk of life. I found that my drawings became not only goods in exchange for money but currency themselves. They awarded me rides, food, shelter and, most importantly, friendship. From farms in the Arctic Circle to the busy streets of London, traveling found its way into my heart.  The drawings from this time were not only for pleasure and payment but became a book of memories that remind me of the senses that were aroused at the time of creation. There is no photograph that can do the same."
