Appointment: Director of Student Life

From the Vice President for Student Affairs
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah M. Young as director of student life at SUNY Buffalo State, following a national search. Her term begins June 1, 2015.

Young comes to Buffalo State from Hofstra University, where since 2010 she has served as executive director of the Office of Student Leadership and Activities. At Hofstra, she was responsible for developing a strategic plan and vision for the areas of orientation, new student programs, leadership, service, fraternity and sorority life, spirit support, and educational and class programming—managing operating and programming budgets of approximately $1.5 million. Young was also responsible for the supervision, training, and evaluation of the director of orientation/associate director of student leadership and activities, the associate director of student leadership and activities, and the senior assistant to the executive director. Additional staff members included four assistant directors, four graduate assistants, two administrative staff members, and approximately 50 student leaders.

Before joining Hofstra, Young held positions as associate director of the Office of Student Activities (2006–2010) and assistant director for college housing (2005–2006) at Stony Brook University. As associate director, she oversaw the involvement of the office in campuswide programs such as Opening Activities and Homecoming. She supervised, trained, and evaluated staff members including the senior adviser, the assistant director for fraternity and sorority life, the evening and weekend program adviser, the graduate assistant for programming, the graduate office manager, and student assistants.

Young earned her master of arts degree in community counseling from West Virginia University and her bachelor of arts degree in European history from Hamilton College.
