Gregory D. Smith, Andrew Mellon Assistant Professor of Conservation Science, Art Conservation, organized the symposium “Shedding Light on Art: The Use of Lasers and Other Intense Light Sources in Art Analysis and Conservation” at the Pittcon 2009 Conference & Expo, the 60th anniversary of the Pittsburgh Conference, held in Chicago, Illinois, March 9–12. Smith also presented an invited lecture, “Lasers and Intense Light Sources Used in the Study and Treatment of Pigment Degradation on Artwork,” coauthored with art conservation graduate student Stephanie Porto. Pittcon 2009 drew more than 19,000 laboratory science professionals from more than 70 countries. Smith’s symposium made the Cover Story section of Chemical & Engineering News, the weekly news magazine published by the American Chemical Society.
