Abraham Lincoln’s Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation Comes to the Burchfield Penney on October 5 and 6

The Burchfield Penney Art Center is pleased to host the exhibition The First Step to Freedom: Abraham Lincoln’s Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on Friday, October 5 (10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.), and Saturday, October 6 (10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.).

The First Step to Freedom offers an unprecedented display of the only surviving version of the document in Lincoln’s handwriting as well as historical background and interpretation of the document. The exhibition also includes the manuscript of a speech written and delivered in New York City in September 1962 by Martin Luther King Jr. for the proclamation’s centennial.

The New York State Museum, a division of the New York State Education Department, has organized this exhibition to mark the sesquicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Admission is free.

More information is available at www.burchfieldpenney.org; additional resources are available on the New York State Museum's website.
